Really depends on the workplace. For a tech/creative company it might be wholly inappropriate to come in wearing a blazer.
You know, I thought about that as a possible exception, but I think for a first interview it rarely hurts to play it safe and dress conservatively. If you’re a strong candidate, I figure a casual office will give you a pass for overdressing. And if they don’t—do you really want to work for a company that dismisses you after the first interview because of how you looked?
During the first interview, you should get a good feel for the office dress code, and then adjust appropriately for the second interview.
I work in a creative/technical field that often prides itself on super casual dress codes, and I don’t think I’ve ever been hurt turning up to an interview in a suit. In fact, at an informational interview for a very casual office a few years ago, the person I met with said that he appreciated that I turned up in a suit. It showed that I saw it as a privilege.
