Just a reminder that the Give in Style promotion ends tonight. Here are three things that I picked up recently.
I was a bit surprised to find that this shirt didn’t fit quite as slim as its Lands’ End Canvas counterpart. Not that I’m complaining — while I appreciate how slim the arms are on LEC’s oxfords, when I roll the sleeves up past my elbows it feels like it pretty much cuts off my circulation. I also prefer Rugby’s more substantial collar.
For comparison, I also bought a custom-fit premier oxford from Ralph Lauren. The fit is similar (I preferred the custom-fit), and it appears to use the exact same fabric as the Rugby oxford, though Rugby’s has some distressing (as documented by Tommy). The Ralph Lauren oxford also features a silk tie fabric gusset, no pocket, slightly shorter arms, and that obnoxious full-color Polo logo.
Shaggy Shetland Patch Sweater - Rugby
I picked this up in grey. The fit is perfect, with slim sleeves and a trim chest. I liked how it looked on me by itself, but layered over a dress shirt it seemed a bit bulky. Not sure if this comes with the territory, or if I need to lose weight (probably) or size down.
It’s wonderfully soft and warm, though the fabric seemed a bit thin—not sure if this is the norm for shaggy sweaters, but it has me worried about durability. I’m not enamored with the elbow patches, either, especially since that particular detail is having a moment right now. I’ve gotta admit, though, they look pretty cool.
Richmond Quilted Jacket - Ralph Lauren
Confession: I scoffed last April when Joshua Kissi over at Street Etiquette called the quilted jacket an essential piece of outerwear. In fact, it triggered my own cynicism about the overuse of the term “essential” in the men’s style blogosphere, and my position didn’t change even after Derek of Die, Workwear! agreed with Josh—twice.
Still, when I got the opportunity to grab one of these at a steep discount, I jumped at the chance to see what the hype was all about.
My thoughts? I’m wearing it today. It’s the second time I’ve worn it, and I’ve only had it for four days. I’d actually placed two large orders with Rugby and Ralph Lauren and returned almost everything, but this was easily a keeper. It’s one handsome piece of outerwear with a remarkably slim and flattering fit. I’m going to use every excuse I can get to wear this fall and winter.
Essential? I still don’t think so. A worthy splurge? Absolutely.
